What does inclusion mean for Endiro?

We believe that all people should be given opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed. At Endiro Coffee, this means we train, hire, and support individuals of all abilities across all our stores.

In Uganda, people with disabilities face challenges with cyclical poverty, as they face stigma and discrimination that limits their opportunities to seek quality education, adequate healthcare, formal employment, and be a part of a welcoming community. In fact, in Uganda, only 8% of people with disabilities are formally employed.

As a café that values inclusivity, we have recently made changes to our stores and our hiring approach to ensure that our employees with disabilities are given equal opportunities to work and contribute to each location’s success.  We believe that it is essential to create an environment that is welcoming to everyone, everywhere, regardless of their abilities.

With the opening of our Sign Language Café in 2020, we began to intentionally hire within the deaf community. We are proud of the success of the store, which not only served our loyal Nakasero customers, but it promoted changes to hiring practices to several other businesses around Uganda.  We also acknowledge and realize that this approach was limiting in terms of making our entire company, across all of our stores, truly inclusive. We are now transitioning to a model of true integration, with our employees with disabilities working across all our stores, our dedicated staff from the Sign Language Café have transitioned to other locations.

With this new model, we hope that we will be able to provide more opportunities to our employees with disabilities in new spaces. We will be able to empower more employees with tangible skills in the coffee and hospitality industries to achieve their career goals and contribute positively to our community.

With more employees with disabilities across all our stores, we hope to  reach more customers and show you just how successful an inclusive model can be. We believe that by proving the capabilities of people with disabilities, we can change the culture of stigma and discrimination in Uganda.

We are proud to announce the opening of a new Endiro space in Nakasero at The Orchid on McKinnon road. This beautiful new space models accessibility and will be an expanded menu from our previous Nakasero location. This site will have space for our new Master Barista Training Program and an innovative inclusive Supportive Employment Program for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities. We hope you will stop by, we know you will love it!

If you have any questions about what an inclusive model looks like, please feel free to reach out. We hope that our customers will support our commitment to inclusivity and join us in creating a welcoming and diverse community at our café’s.
